URGENT - NO IMMUNITY FOR WAR CRIMINALS - CONTACT YOUR MP NOW!

Following the news that Tipi Livni, who served as Foreign Minister in the Israeli government that planned and executed Israel ’s brutal bombing and massacre in Gaza , faced arrest if she entered Britain (see below), tell the government there must be no impunity for Israeli war criminals.  Please act URGENTLY - if possible e-mail your MP today.  http://www.writetothem.com/

Ask your MP to do the following:

1. Sign Early Day Motion 502 tabled by Jeremy Corbyn MP defending the right to bring war criminals to justice: http://edmi.parliament.uk/EDMi/EDMDetails.aspx?EDMID=40074&SESSION=903

 2. Urgently contact the Foreign Office raising the following points:

  • The government has a duty under the Fourth Geneva Convention to ‘seek out and prosecute’ alleged war criminals. Under the Geneva Conventions Act 1957, the UK has universal jurisdiction to arrest and try suspected perpetrators of “grave breaches” of the Fourth Geneva Convention 1949 (IVCG). War criminals should be pursued – Britain must not become a ‘safe haven’.
  • The judicial system is meant to be independent and the government’s role is not to intervene. If a judge believes there is sufficient evidence for an arrest warrant to be granted, it is irrelevant whether this embarrasses or causes problems for the British government.
  • The Goldstone Report detailed war crimes and potential crimes against humanity committed by Israel in Gaza . It was shameful that the government abstained on the vote for the Report at the UN Human Rights Council and General Assembly.
  • Instead of responding to pressure from the Israeli government to end the right to charge and prosecute war criminals, the government should immediately change its position – it should support international law and justice, and act itself to uphold the Fourth Geneva Convention.
  • Britain cannot be a true and independent ‘partner’ for peace if its policies are one-sided, and it allows those responsible for war crimes against Palestinians to avoid justice.
  • Tzipi Livni is just the latest in a list of Israelis who have come under scrutiny over allegations of war crimes. Our government should reflect on this, and change its foreign policy, including ending its arms trade with Israel.

AN APOLOGY FROM THE MANAGER OF THE HENDON HALL HOTEL

Today the manager of the above hotel rang, in response to my telephone calls over the weekend expressing concern that the hotel was hosting the JNF conference and its guest speaker, Tzipi Livni, on Sunday. The manager asked me to convey her deepest apologies to anyone who may have been upset by the hotels inadvertent acceptance of the JNF booking. The hotel staff  did not know who the JNF or Tzipi Livni were. They were shocked by the demonstration on Sunday and by the telephone calls they received. They were angry that the JNF had not given any indication of the nature of the conference. The police had called to the hotel mid-week to do a security check for a "visiting dignitary" but not told them who she was. ( Dignitary? really? )

When the hotel manager asked me to explain who Livni was, I told her about the war- crimes in Gaza and Livnis' role in planning and implementing the 22 day assault. She was distressed, shocked and very apologetic. She had quite innocently taken the booking. She had telephoned the JNF organiser earlier this morning and told him that he and the JNF organisation is banned in future from using the hotel again. (I hope this applies to the whole chain of hotels to which HHHotel belongs ).

She offered a free nights B&B as a prize in one of our charity events as a gesture of apology.
Please pass on this message to all involved. Well done everybody who phoned or emailed. If our government lacks any moral compass in hosting war criminals, let us target the hotels to prevent these  vicious war criminals finding hospitality in the UK. Hotel management might have more humanity than our politicians.  (From Anne via e-mail)

BOYCOTT ACTION AGAINST MORRISON'S

There was a very good turnout for the picket outside Morrison's Head Office in Bradford on the afternoon of Friday 13th November with several Halifax friends of Palestine members in attendance as you will see from the photographs below.

Later the same day there was an action in a Morrison's store in
Chorlton in Manchester. Twenty-fice protestors entered the store, collected Israeli and illegal settlement goods on sale, leafleted shoppers, and staged a protest at customer service. You can see a video of the action here.

Morrison's agreed top meet a delegation at their Head Office to discuss the issue of settlement goods - something they had always refused to do and the reason for them being targetted on this occasion.

SPONSORED WALK A SUCCESS

A small but dedicated band of walkers made the sponsored walk held on Sunday 18th October a great success.  Using two routes starting from the Mytholmroyd Community Centre and helped by excellent Autumn weather they raised £315 for the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions - an organisation that uses non-violent direct action to oppose and resist Israeli demolition of Palestinian homes in the occupied territories.

FUND-RAISING IN THE SUN!

Jenny Lynn, Audrey Moore, The Mayor of Halifax, Councillor Arshad Mahmood and Paul Wimpenny

Annie O'Gara and Jack Freeborn

Late summer sunshine turned a coffee morning held at Audrey Moore’s home in Halifax into an impromptu garden party. Friends and supporters were able to sit outside and enjoy her lovely garden in Halifax, whilst inside was a produce stall selling home made jams, and Palestinian products such as dates, olive oil and lemon soap. The Mayor of Halifax, Councillor Arshad Mahmood, came along and mingled with the guests. The event raised just over £160 for Friends of Palestine funds. Jack and Diana Freeborn also held a garden party recently as a fund raiser for Save the Children fund, Jack’s book sale raised money for the Al-Alia hospital in Gaza, and the Hadeel craft stall sold about £600 worth of Palestinian goods.

ACTION AGAINST CO-OP BANK

Earlier this year Halifax members joined with others from Manchester and York PSC groups to lobby the Co-op Bank Head Office in Manchester for refusing to let the charity Interpal open an account with them. They say that Interpal has been blacklisted by the USA because it works in Gaza (and thus has to deal with Hamas) and any British bank offering it services could be penalised by the US.
